Our best Buddy is gone. We lost him to a bone disease not uncommon in Goldens. Buddy was a very sweet dog that just wanted to be right by your side at all times of the day and night. He loved to give you his hand to hold, and when you thought he'd gone to sleep and let it go, he'd put his hand right back up and ask you to hold it again. Buddy always gave unconditional love. Our children loved him dearly because he gave so much love back. He was always waiting for you at the gate wagging his tail when you came home. He was the perfect companion and always seemed to be smiling. He was best friends with our Maine Coon cat, Dobie, and often they would sleep next to each other.
He loved to go on walks but you had to watch him because he would suddenly cross right in front of your legs as you were walking. (I took a fall while running with him and had a broken nose to attest to that. Poor Buddy kept circling around me until help came. I could tell he was thinking, "Oh, oh, did I do that?")
Our children loved to take Buddy to Laguna Beach. Everyone would talk to him, Japanese tourists would get very animated saying, "Bear! Bear!" Others would just say he looked like a bear. He would often be greeted with, "Hello big head" because he had the boxy head of a champion. Many people who didn't know him would just say, "Hello Buddy" because he just seemed like a buddy. Buddy was registered. Both his parents were champions. His father was Sasha, who was out of Kala, who was the number three champion on the East Coast. Buddy was gorgeous, but it was his personality that made him so beloved.
When we went to pick out a puppy, my boys wanted to get his brother, but the breeder told us his name was "Trouble" and I said we weren't going to get a dog named trouble, and so we took Buddy home. The next day the breeder called and said, "Hey, I made a mistake. The puppy you bought is Trouble!" But, he was never any trouble to us.
Buddy loved to swim and would go in the pool and dog paddle about 5 times a day. He didn't go too far. He would just cool off, or he would go on a ride in the pool in our big red inner tube. Buddy would always accompany me arranging flowers. He loved to be there right in the middle of it all. Buddy has been a part of this site. There are quite a few post with Buddy, and some with Buddy and his favorite toy the kitty. He would carry it around gently in his soft mouth and he would sleep with it. My son bought it to give to my daughter, but Buddy liked it so much my son gave it to him. We would say, "Where's your baby?" and Buddy would run and find the kitty and bring it back. So, if you miss Buddy from my posts, we are missing him too. As hot tears have been washing our faces I told our kids that we will see Buddy again, because he was so much a part of our family.
I thought about all of the pets that we have had. The rabbits and fish we won't miss too much. They were cute, but you can't have a real friendship with them. I thought about all of the pets that I had growing up. I'm not so sure I want to be greeted by brother's pet crocodile on the other side, that bit his finger and devoured whole frogs right before our eyes. He was an interesting pet to be sure, an exotic. He gave us something back too, but it was a kid's version of a horror show in technicolor, accompanied by our shrieks and "Oh"s, while Buddy gave back love and companionship. He wanted to share every moment of your life with you, waking and sleeping, a fine friend who held our hand even to the end. Farewell Buddy.
